Joshua and Mercedes got really excited about carving our pumpkin this year. I held off on buying one because last year the pumpking went rotten soo fast. Well, there's no point holding off, because all of the pumpkins to choose from were rotting. Anyway, I found the least rotten of the bunch and we carved a "scary" face. The kids named the pumpkin "scary face" respectively.
Joshua was anxious to be apart of the carving process and helped clean out the seeds. He pretended he was pulling Scary Face's brain out. Mercedes didn't want to touch the guts, and Luke was afraid of the guts.
After the carving was over, we had fun turning out the lights and watching it glow. Jon Mark shined the image onto the wall and the kids thought that was borderline too spooky. Again, Luke didn't like it one bit. He was traumatized.
For Halloween, we had planned on being the Star Wars family for our ward trunk or treat. Then, for trick or treating, Mercedes wanted to be Cinderella, and Joshua either a superhero or Luke Skywalker (again). However, due to Hurricane Sandy, our traditional Halloween was cancelled and rescheduled for a week later. Jon Mark and I decided not to go trick or treating because the weather was wet and cold, we didn't think that the kids would notice, we were wrong. I had to console the kids with cookies and ice cream and a promise that I would let them pick out some candy at Target later on. They seemed okay with that.
So, as you can tell, Jon Mark was Darth Vader, I was Queen Amidala, Joshua was Luke Skywalker, Mercedes was Leia, and Luke was Yoda.
Joshua didn't approve of my costume. He said, and I quote, "you're not as pretty with those dots on your face and with white makeup on." He kept saying it over and over. Then, on the way to the church, he actually told me that he was going to try his hardest to stay away from me so that he didn't have to see my not-as-pretty face. Maybe that night was the first of embarrassing nights to come for him in regards to a parent. Heaven forbid one of his friends saw me dressed as Queen Amidala. Silly kid. Mercedes and Luke didn't seem to mind too much. In fact, I think Mercedes liked my makeup, and I'd bet she would have let me put makeup on her that looked exactly like that. Luke didn't really say anything. Mercedes made the cutest little Leia. She wished that she had had her original Leia dress, however, her original one is the one that Luke is wearing for his Yoda costume. She had outgrown it to say the least. I made her a new robe out of two pillow cases and a belt. I also made Luke's Yoda hat. The store wanted 20 bucks for one that looked very similar to the one I made. So, I made their costumes with what I had on hand. I even remade Jon Mark's costume (just reattaching all of the stuff to a Tshirt that fit him better).
